ACC Baseball
Sweeps Into Brockton Boston College
set to host Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, May 2nd at
Campanelli Stadium
April
30, 2009 - Brockton, MA - The Boston College Eagles will host
the Miami Hurricanes in ACC conference play on Saturday, May 2nd
at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. Saturday’s first pitch is
scheduled for 6:00 PM.
The
Eagles make their annual trip to Campanelli Stadium where they
have previously faced opponents such as Notre Dame, Maryland,
and Duke. This spring, Boston College welcomes the University of
Miami Hurricanes, a college baseball powerhouse and current
top-25 team.
The
contest lends itself to be a pivotal matchup between two teams
off to exceptional starts in 2009. The Eagles opened up
conference play by taking two of three games from then
sixth-ranked Florida State; accomplishing something no team has
ever done before. Florida State previously had been 43-5 in
games during the conference’s opening weekend since 1992, and
had never lost a conference-play opening series.
Boston
College (28-17 Overall, 11-11 ACC) has been led by Junior C Tony
Sanchez, named the ACC’s Player of the Week twice already this
season. A hot prospect for this Spring’s MLB Draft, Sanchez is
batting .366 with 12 home runs and 37 RBI this year. Sanchez
hails from Miami, Florida.
The
Miami Hurricanes (29-15 Overall, 13-11 ACC) are currently ranked
13th in the nation. The Hurricanes have had two
players recognized as the ACC Pitcher of the Week. Junior closer
Kyle Bellamy and Junior starter David Gutierrez earned the
honors earlier in the season.
Campanelli
Stadium is home of the Can-Am League’s Brockton Rox. Tickets
for the game between Boston College and Miami are currently
available at www.brocktonrox.com
or by calling the Brockton Rox Ticket Office at (508) 559-7000.
Admission for the game is $5.
Morton
Hospital Prepares for National Stroke Awareness Month
April
29, 2009 - Taunton, MA – More than 80 Morton Hospital
and Medical Center nurses and stroke committee members
recently met to kick off National Stroke Awareness
Month, beginning May 1. Since its inception, the group
has committed to bimonthly meetings to discuss the
Hospital’s progress in stroke care, as well as
breakthroughs and new treatment options.
Galen Henderson,
MD, (center) with Morton Hospital Stress Committee
members (l-r) Gary Grace, MBA; Barbara Chase, RNC; Lydia
Jefferson, BSN, RN; and Sharon Smith, RN.
Galen
Henderson, MD, Director of Critical Care Emergency
Neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Boston,
was guest speaker at the recent event held at Benjamin’s
Restaurant. Henderson, who is also an Assistant
Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and
Neurological Consultant for the American Stroke
Association, brought nurses from all departments up to
date on cutting-edge diagnostics and treatments for
patients experiencing strokes or transient ischemic
attacks (TIAs), also known as "mini-strokes"
that produce stroke-like symptoms.
"As
a designated stroke center, we must educate our
physicians, nurses and communities about stroke
management," said Barbara Chase, RNC, Nursing
Education. "It is critical that all of us
understand the signs of a stroke and act quickly to
increase the likelihood of effective, immediate care.
One of the key messages we are trying to convey is that
stroke symptoms such as weakness or slurring of speech
should be thought of as a possible ‘brain attack,’
just as chest pain and shortness of breath are
associated with a possible heart attack."
Morton
Hospital has been designated as a Primary Stroke Center
by the Department of Public Health, and has received
honors from Stroke Collaborative Reaching for Excellence
(SCORE) for its commitment to excellence in stroke care.

"Jacobs Live" Celebrates 500th Episode
By
Marc Ruprecht
April 28, 2009 - Taunton, MA - It was a
Who's Who in Taunton Politics at the Taunton Community Access & Media studios last night as Bob Jacobs, host of
Jacobs Live celebrated his 500th episode.
The extended 90-minute show opened with a skit featuring "Angry Bob Jacobs" sitting alongside "Nice Bob Jacobs" on the set
with the help of television magic. The two Bobs debated over which one of them made the show a success and the bit ends with "Angry Bob"
storming off the set and eventually having a heart attack.

Jacobs, who is also the President of the Board at TCAM, took calls from grateful Taunton residents thanking him for being a voice for the community. "It doesn't matter what's on TV, I watch you," stated one female caller.
One segment of the milestone show included a video retrospective, produced by TCAM Executive Director Kimberly Matthews, showing a
wide range of local topics such as the David Smith case. The video started with a clip from episode number one, when the program was called Taunton After Dark. Along with footage from previous anniversary shows were clips of past guests including
then Gubernatorial Candidate Deval Patrick.
Mr. Jacobs also "teased" the viewing audience about the future of
Jacobs Live saying, "You'll have to stick around until the end of the show."
Several local politicos congratulated Jacobs on his achievement. In-studio guests included City Councilor Dan Barbour, City Council President
David Pottier and School Committee Member Barry Cooperstein, who questioned Jacobs' intelligence, "500 shows, 11 years, no pay." Telephone well wishers included County Commissioner Maria F. Lopes, co-host of TCAM's
FYI John McCaul, TMLP Commissioner Peter Corr and Register of Deeds Barry
Amaral.
Also on the set to celebrate were members of the Jacobs family including his wife
of almost 40 years, Ann, while others phoned in as did a neighbor of the veteran talk show host.
The final in-studio guest of the broadcast was Mayor Charles Crowley. Crowley, no stranger to the studio lights, hosts another of TCAM's long-running series, Old Tyme Taunton. Mayor Crowley joked that at 500 shows, Mr. Jacobs was now "part of
his show," a part of Taunton history.
Jacobs was presented with a green t-shirt displaying the number "500" on it from friends Rick and Joanne Weldon and a cake from his wife. The cake, commemorating the 500th show, was decorated with an RCA television tuned to
Jacobs Live.
As for the future of the show, Jacobs stated," It's not easy to do a show like this. A few months ago I decided that the 500th show would be the last show." Bob continued that while the show was rewarding, "A solid effort every week can be tiring,"
and that he could walk away feeling good about the work he had done.
But with new issues facing the City of Taunton and the Fall elections just getting started, Jacobs goes on to
reveal, "There's more work to be done and he's not ready to leave."
Jacobs plans on producing
Jacobs Live through the Fall election season and will revisit
the show's future at that time.
You can watch the rebroadcast of the
Jacobs Live 500th episode on Saturday, May 2 at
7pm, Comcast Channel 15 and Verizon Channel 22. The episode will also be available throughout the month of May on TCAM's website,
www.tcamtv.com.

New
Non-Profit to Help with Taunton Scholarship Donations
April 28,
2009 - Taunton, MA - A new way of donating for scholarships has been established for Taunton Public Schools. Dr. Arthur Stellar, Superintendent of Schools, is pleased to announce that the Taunton High School Faculty and Community Scholarship Fund has been designated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as an official non-profit tax free status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. “For many individuals and organizations this designation is either a requirement for their contributions or a means to provide clarity for tax purposes,” added Superintendent Stellar.
Michael
Raposa, who oversees the newly formed “Taunton High School Faculty and Community Scholarship Fund, Inc.” commented, “We are thrilled to receive this status. Businesses and individuals may now establish scholarships and claim their donation as a tax deduction. We have given out hundreds of scholarships in the past through “Alumni” and “Memorial” scholarships but now that we that we are a 501(c)(3) entity it is our hope more businesses, individuals and corporations will help in supporting our college bound students.”
“This distinction truly opens the doors for businesses to make a difference in our students’ future by establishing their own scholarships and to become a part of the educational community here in Taunton” said Donna
Trucchi, Business Partnerships Liaison. “The adage “it takes a village to raise a child” rings true. Our students are especially reliant on scholarships due to the current economy.”
Massachusetts
Continues its Response to Outbreak of Swine Flu 20 confirmed
swine flu cases in United States; none in Massachusetts at
this time
April
28, 2009 - Boston,
MA — State
health officials continue to work closely with partners at
the federal, state and local level to respond to the swine
flu outbreak in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
has declared the outbreak of swine flu a public health
emergency.
As
part of that declaration, federal officials have begun
shipment of significant quantities of materials to help
states prepare and respond to the spread of swine flu.
These materials include antiviral medications for
treatment of individuals who are sick, along with other
medical equipment and supplies that may be needed if the
current situation changes. Massachusetts will begin
receiving initial quantities of these materials in the
coming days.
“This
is understandably a concerning time for Massachusetts
residents who have heard so much about swine flu over the
past couple of days,” said DPH Commissioner John
Auerbach. “However, I want to assure everyone that our
team is working overtime on this matter and I am confident
that we are taking all necessary precautions to protect
the people of the Commonwealth.”
DPH
officials continue to take steps to increase surveillance
of influenza-like illness in Massachusetts, asking health
care providers and hospital emergency departments to be on
the lookout for flu-like symptoms — especially in people
who have recently traveled to Mexico or any of the U.S.
states which have confirmed cases. If a provider suspects
a patient may be infected with swine flu, DPH requests
that they perform and submit a swab test for laboratory
testing.
Even
though no cases have been identified in Massachusetts,
there are steps that everyone can take to prevent getting
or spreading any type of influenza: wash your hands often
with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand
sanitizer; cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your
elbow instead of into your hands; and if you’re sick,
stay home from work or school and limit contact with
others to avoid infecting them.
Swine
influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type
A influenza viruses. Outbreaks of swine flu happen
regularly in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu,
but human infections can and do happen. Most commonly,
human cases of swine flu happen in people who are around
pigs but it’s possible for swine flu viruses to spread
from person to person as well. Swine flu is not
transmitted by food and you cannot get swine flu by eating
pork products.

BOOK REVIEW
7TH
Heaven (Fiction)
Author: James Patterson
Review by Shirley
Hogan
About
the Author James
Patterson is the world’s most popular thriller writer,
with over 150 million copies of his books in print
worldwide. Some of his best sellers include- 1ST
To Die, 2ND Chance, 3RD Degree, 4TH
of July, 5TH Horseman and 6TH
Target. They all include the "Women’s Murder
Club". For more information you can visit www.jamespatterson.com.
Michael
Campion, extremely well known son of California’s
ex- Governor, is missing. Often compared to the
Kennedy family, Michael has been very sheltered
due to an incurable heart defect.
Detective
Lindsey Boxer and her partner Rich have been
assigned to this case after Michael has been
missing for three months. In addition to working
on this case they are also given a case
involving fires in the homes of only the very
rich.
Many
leads came in, one of which directed Lindsey and
Rich to a prostitute who was said to be the last
person to see Michael. Also, whoever committed
the arsons left the same clue at each house
proving they were not accidents.
This
is the seventh installment of the "Women’s
Murder Club"- all friends of Lindsey’s.
They are a varied group of women who work
together to solve crimes.
James
Patterson has added just enough balance
including excitement, gore, mystery and curious
events to keep interest throughout. I definitely
would recommend this book. What a great read. I
have rated this book four out of five stars.
