25, 2009 - LACEY is a female Bull Terrier, about 1/2 yrs
old. Lacey is somewhat shy and timid at first, but warms
up quickly. She just entered the shelter and has
already giving out kisses to several of the volunteers
and happily wags from head to toe when she sees someone
she knows. We recommend no toddlers, as they would be
too active for her. We are not yet sure about her with
other dogs or cats. Please call the Taunton Shelter at

Closing the Achievement Gap
June
19, 2009 - Taunton, MA – Parker Middle School has been
awarded a $10,000 grant to focus on "Closing the
Achievement Gap." The purpose of the grant is to
help reduce achievement gaps in English Language Arts
for students who are underperforming at Parker Middle
School. These students lack the specific skills and
strategies to access literary texts and are struggling
with increasingly complex vocabulary in literacy texts.
This grant is a classroom project that uses an online
educational tool, developed by Verizon and endorsed by
the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education.
(L to R)
Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester, Richard Colon,
Verizon Regional Director External Affairs, Stacey
Pattou-Hammond, Taunton Public Schools Reading
Coordinator & Donna Cupelo, Regional President
Verizon
"This
grant presents a great opportunity for Parker School’s
staff to receive professional development and support in
order to target particular skills. This will also
support Parker’s goal to facilitate common
understandings about the role of culture and diversity
to support all students" says Taunton’s
reading/literacy coordinator Stacey Pattou-Hammond.
Dr.
Arthur Stellar Taunton’s superintendent stated,
"Reducing the achievement gap is key to school
improvement and an area of concern across the
Commonwealth. This project is an example of how one can
move urban schools forward in an era of high
accountability."
The
project is one of 15 creative educational-improvement
ideas that will come to fruition, thanks to $150,000 in
grants awarded by the Verizon Foundation as part of the
2009 Think Ahead With Thinkfinity Awards.
"Taunton’s
Reading Coordinator Stacey Hammond should be commended

Morton
Hospital Breast Surgeon Receives "Unsung
Heroine" Award
June
19, 2009 - Taunton, MA – The Massachusetts Commission
on the Status of Women recently named Elizabeth Tito,
MD, one of its 100 "Unsung Heroines of 2009."
Dr. Tito, a breast surgeon at Morton Hospital and
Medical Center, was nominated by her colleague Ginny
Starvish, RN, Morton Hospital Breast Care Nurse
Navigator.
Dr.
Tito was honored for her outstanding contributions to
Morton Hospital and the greater Taunton community during
a ceremony at the State House in Boston. The event was
hosted by NewsCenter 5’s Liz Brunner, and featured an
introduction of each honoree, as well as a catered
reception.
According
to the Commission, the Unsung Heroines "don’t
make the news, they make the difference," and Dr.
Tito has been making a positive difference at the
Hospital for several years. Some of her most recent
accomplishments include the initiation of a nurse
navigator program to assist breast care patients, and
the creation of a Community Advisory Board (CAB) to
improve future programs and services to breast care
patients. She is a constant advocate for women’s
breast health awareness, and has helped to raise more
than $10,000 to support patients and their families.
Elizabeth
Tito, MD
"It’s
been an honor to work with such an amazing group of
women in our community," said Tito. "These

I created gave them a chance to serve the community and
shine."

and look forward to exploring the treasures at Old
Colony and in Taunton." Fellow staff, board members
and Society members have greeted the new curator with
enthusiasm. Jane Hennedy, Director of the OCHS, said,

BOOK REVIEW
A Good
Woman (Fiction)
Author: Danielle Steel
Review by Shirley
Hogan
About
the Author Danielle Steel is probably one of the most
popular authors today. She is an international author
and has sold over 580 million books. A few of her best
sellers include- One Day at a Time, Rogue, Honor
Thyself, Amazing Grace and many other novels. A very
special novel is His Bright Light about the life and
death of her son.
Annabelle
Worthington, a nineteen year-old socialite, born
and raised into New York society, lived on Fifth
Avenue and in Newport, Rhode Island. To everyone
else her life seemed perfect until the sinking
of the Titanic when her life becomes forever
changed. Her volunteer work takes precedence and
she finds herself in the worst conditions,
nursing the poor. In doing so, she finds her
passion lies in medicine.
After
what seems like an idyllic marriage, her life
goes into a downward spiral, not being able to
reveal her husband’s secrets and the end of
her marriage. Annabelle flees from New York
after being shunned by everyone and throws
herself into the horror of WWI. Annabelle finds
her true calling and begins her new life in
Paris. Becoming a doctor and then a mother, with
her past almost forgotten, she is now ready to
return for one more visit home to New York. No
longer ashamed, she regains her self-respect.
Danielle
Steel has done a beautiful job in this novel
describing images and historical detail. This
novel is not her usual as it takes you in many
directions and is never boring. I find her
fortitude inspiring to move ahead against all
odds.
I
rate A Good Woman four and a half out of
five stars.
Please

I may include your comments in my next review.

Parliament, Dr. Jaime Gama, visited Boston Tuesday to
give the keynote address in the 25th annual Heritage Day
of Portugal at the State House, as 16 people from
throughout the Commonwealth were presented with the

"It
was truly an honor to have Dr. Gama travel all the way
from Lisbon to be with us here today, for this 25th
anniversary event," said Sen. Marc Pacheco,
D-Taunton, chairman of the event. "But it was
also an honor to be able to recognize the many people
who were here today for their contributing to the
Portuguese community in Massachusetts."

the Board of the Greater Taunton Charitable Association.
Both contribute a great deal of time and money to many
other local causes.

education at Endicott College. Elizabeth also studied

Portuguese-American values by their dedication to the
community and their contributions to the larger
society," said Pacheco.

Left outside of the shelter, that is where I was found

abandoned in the dark of night. Even so, I am still
friendly and sweet and paw for attention when someone

Taunton's
New Wave of National Merit Scholarship Qualifiers
May
28, 2009 - Taunton, MA - Four Taunton sophomores may be
named either National Merit "Semi-Finalists"
or "Commended Students" based upon their 2008
PSAT scores. One or two of these students could be named
"Semi-Finalists" based upon how their PSAT
scores compare to others across the state and country.
Only a few students reach this level of achievement,
although over the last four years there has been a new
wave of high achieving students in Taunton.
These
high achieving students are: Chloe Blethen, Kevin
Campbell, Andrew Logan and Nicholas Roberts.
"These
four students are the latest in the new wave of
potentially even more National Merit honor students
based upon the revitalized middle school curriculum and
instruction, as well as the high school," stated
Superintendent Arthur Stellar. "The results speak
for themselves."
Over
the last three years, Taunton has placed more emphasis
on the PSAT which is the preliminary (P) to the college
admission test, the SAT. The PSAT determines those
students who qualify for National Merit Scholarship
Programs. All four Taunton students named above are
eligible for participation in the National Merit
Scholarship Program, although only two are possible for
"Semi-Finalist" status. The Semi-Finalists
continue in competition for the 2010 National Merit
Scholarships.
"Being
considered for National Merit Commended Students"
is quite an honor for these four students and a
testimony to their work ethic and the value their
families place on education," commented
Superintendent Arthur Stellar. He added: "Reaching
this level of achievement means that these students have
had some very good teachers – from elementary school
to high school."

"National Hospital Week" celebration. The
Mayor gave a special proclamation to Thomas Porter,
president of Morton Hospital, and presented "A
History of Morton Hospital and the City of
Taunton."
Mayor
Charles Crowley, right, presents a proclamation to
Morton Hospital President Thomas Porter, left, during
National Hospital Week 2009.
Crowley,
a noted local historian and long-time Tauntonian,
discussed the evolution of the city of Taunton,
recognizing several well-known historical landmarks
including the Star Theater, the giant Hood Milk Bottle
and the Taunton Daily Gazette. He spoke of the once
booming downtown area of Taunton, and said, "There’s
no reason why downtown can’t come back again."
The
presentation, which was attended by Morton Hospital
staff members and volunteers, brought back memories for
a number of local residents. Employees were also
reminded of Governor Marcus Morton, after whom Morton
Hospital was named, and Dr. Silas Presbrey, one of the
first physicians and original founders of the Hospital.
The
Mayor’s visit was one of several National Hospital
Week events hosted by the Hospital, but most would agree
it was the highlight of the week. The audience left with
a great sense of pride in Morton Hospital, as well as a
wealth of knowledge about the city of Taunton.
"There’s so much to be proud of about this
city," said Mayor Crowley. "The more you know
about it, the more you love it."

Martin
Middle School Wins Lowe’s Foundation Grant
May
26, 2009 - Taunton, MA - The Taunton Public Schools is
proud to announce that the Joseph H. Martin Middle
School has been awarded a $2,000 Lowe's Toolbox for
Education grant from the Lowe's Charitable and
Educational Foundation (LCEF). The grant funds the
"Growing a Love for Science" project that will
create an outdoor classroom at the school.
Taunton’s
Science Coordinator, Ron Griffin expressed his
excitement about the project: "I’m thrilled that
Lowes has sponsored this grant. It gives our students
the opportunity to do hands on science as well as take
an active role in making Martin Middle School a greener
place to learn and work."
The
Growing a Love for Science project will renovate the area
into a multifunctional outdoor classroom with an 8 x 10
greenhouse as its centerpiece. The mission of this project
is to enhance the science curriculum for all of the
students in grades 5-8 by developing new hands-on projects
that engage students. Through the generosity of Lowe's,
students will be able to work year round on plant projects
that the harsh New England Climate would otherwise
prevent. Specific examples include plant physiology based
labs for grades 5-6 and science fair projects for grades
7-8. In addition to the greenhouse, the outdoor classroom
will include gardens suited for the local climate, weather
instruments to support the fifth grade meteorology studies
and science fair projects, and benches for student
discussions.
Joseph
H. Martin Middle School
Superintendent
Arthur Stellar stated, "We have very dedicated
staff who are applying for these kinds of grants which
help our budget situation. This is a great environmental
project for students."
An
additional component of the project is the purchase of
compost bins, so that students can create natural
fertilizer for all of the plants and flowers in the
garden while supporting the school-wide recycling
program.
First
year Principal Michael Byron says about the grant
project, "This outdoor classroom will result in
many important curriculum enhancements for the Martin
Middle School, but it will be just as meaningful to the
surrounding community. The playground that previously
inhabited the proposed renovation sight had been funded
completely on donations from the community and had been
built solely by local volunteers. When it was torn down,
the neighborhood that had taken such pride in this
accomplishment was left with an unsightly vacant lot.
They had given what they could to improve their school
and had nothing to show for it. Having an outdoor
classroom filled with gardens and various creative and
engaging learning areas will restore that pride."
Mr.
Byron also states "that the project should be up
and running for the opening of the 2009-2010 school year
and he hopes to expand on the classroom each year."
